Korvettenkapitän Hans-Gerrit von Stockhausen |
Hans-Gerrit von Stockhausen began his naval career in April 1926. Among other positions he served for a year on the torpedo boat Jaguar before transferring to the U-boat force in July 1935. As 'man of the first hour' he already commanded U-13 in November 1935. Two years later, according to some sources, he became a staff member of the FdU (later BdU).
He left the BdU staff in December 1939 and on 15 February 1940 commissioned the Type IXB boat U-65. On his first patrol in June 1940 he was believed to have destroyed the French steamship Champlain (28,124 tons) in a fog but that vessel actually fell to air-laid mines instead and Stockhausen sank the 1.117 ton steamer Berenice instead.
After his fifth patrol Korvkpt. von Stockhausen left the boat.
He then became commander of the 26th Flotilla in Pillau.
He was killed in a car accident in Berlin in January 1943.
