Werner Zapf entered the Kriegsmarine in 1936. He went through U-boat training from Aug 1942 to Sept 1943. Zapf then served as a Watch Officer with the 11th flotilla until Feb 1944.

Zapf was a Watch Officer on the U-965 from Feb to Aug 1944 when he began his U-boat commander training at the 24th flotilla. He graduated and took command of the small school boat U-61 on 2 Dec 1944.

From March 1945 Werner Zapf served in the 3. ULD and a Naval Anti-tank brigade. He fell in land-defense of Germany on 3 May 1945.
