Personal information
Dahlhaus went through training from July 1939 to May 1941 when he was assigned to the new U-753 being built. He served as a Watch Officer for 18 months from June 1941 to Dec 1942. Dahlhaus went through U-boat commander training until Jan 1943 when he took command of U-634 on 28 Jan.
Youngest U-boat commander
When Dahlhaus took his U-634 out from Bergen, Norway on 18 Feb 1943 he was the youngest German U-boat commander at the time, only 22 years old (see the final list). He was already an experienced U-boat officer at this time. His first command came at a time when the German U-boats were being sunk at an alarming rate but he brought his boat back from two patrols before being sunk with all hands on his third patrol.
