Hans-Botho Bade entered the Kriegsmarine in 1939. He was the Second Watch Officer (2WO) on the U-69 from Jan 1941 to Feb 1942, serving almost 200 days at sea. In Feb 1942 he went through U-boat commander courses and Baubelehrung (observing the final construction of a U-boat) until he took command of the U-626 on 11 June 1942.
Hans-Botho Bade was a former merchant marine captain (Blair, 1998).
