Werner Fresdorf joined the Kriegsmarine in 1927. He went through U-boat training from July to Sept 1935. From Oct to Dec 1935 he served with the U-Flotilla Weddigen and went through an U-boat familiarization (Baubelehrung) programme for the U-17 being constructed at Kiel (Busch & Röll, 1999).
On 3 Dec 1935 Werner Fresdorf commissioned the new U-17. He commanded the boat for almost 2 years, handing over command on 1 Nov 1937. During his command of the boat he also served as a torpedo adviser with the Weddigen flotilla from 22 Nov 1936 to 25 Sept 1937 (Busch & Röll, 1999).
He served at the Naval Academy at Kiel from Nov 1937 to Aug 1938 when he began serving on U-boat operations for Kriegsmarine High Command (OKM). He was still in this role when he died in an accident (Busch & Röll, 1999).
Kptlt. Werner Fresdorf was killed in an air crash near Munsterlager (Busch & Röll, 1999).
