Served aboard Zerstörer Z22 "Anton Schmitt" during Norwegian campaign where it was sunk by 2nd British Destroyer Fleet on 10 April 1940 after which he joined Marine Regiment Narvik a unit set up consisting of Kriegsmarine members whose ships had been destroyed then to Küstensicherungsverband West.

In 1942 he retrained in the U-boat arm, July to 3 U-boot Flottille aboard U-432 for 2 patrols, February 43 to 24 U-boot Flottille in command of U-34 a training ship, September 43 to 23 U-boot Flottille in command of U-704 another training ship, August 44 as "Schießleiter" with Lehrkommando 300 Kleinkampfverbande unit equipped with "Seehund" 2 man midget submarines.
