Kapitän zur See Hermann Lessing was one of the oldest U-boat commanders of WWII to depart on patrol when he took his boat U-1231 out from Bergen, Norway on 18 Oct 1944. He was 44 years old at the time. He returned to base after 106 days at sea on 31 Jan 1945. This was his only war patrol.
