Karl-Heinz Raabe joined the Kriegsmarine in 1938. He served with minesweeping flotillas (44th, 14th and 44th again) from Aug 1940 to Jan 1943 when he joined the U-boat force.
From Jan to Sept 1943 Karl-Heinz Raabe went through his U-boat training, including Commander course, spending he last month in U-boat familiarization (Baubelehrung).
Raabe took command of his first boat, the type VIIC school boat U-1161, on 27 Sept 1943 before joining the 18th flotilla in Jan 1945. He commanded another school boat, the former combat boat U-1007, from Feb to April 1945.
