Ernst-August Rehwinkel was one of the oldest U-boat commanders of WWII to depart on patrol when he took his boat U-578 out from Kirkesnes, Norway on 19 Nov 1941. He was 40 years old at the time. He was successful with his boat before being lost without explanation on his 5th patrol around 6 Aug 1942 in the Bay of Biscay (Niestlé, 1998).
