The battle

The first convoy attacked in the war was OB - 4 en route from Liverpool to Northern America.

U-31 (Kptlt. Johannes Habekost) sighted the convoy on 15 September, 1939 and attacked the OB - 4 the next day at 0815hrs. This first attack was successful, as the British steamer Aviemore (4,060 tons) was sunk. This was the only ship lost in that convoy.

Two weeks later, on October 2, 1939, U-31 returned to Wilhelmshaven.
