Das U-Boot Lied (I)

MP3 (verses I and III only) (174 kb)

I. Wir haben Tag und Nacht
kein Auge zugemacht

Refrain
Heimat, so weit von hier,
Heimat, dich gr?ßen wir
F?r dich, da fahren wir
den lauernden Tod im Torpedorohr,
ran an den Feind! U-Boote vor.

II. Zwei Wochen stehn wir schon
auf Deck und Tauchstation,
die Walhalla ist noch nicht in Sicht.
Die Tage gehen vorbei
in ewgem Einerlei
- aber Beute gibt's noch immer nicht.
Da plötzlich tönt Alarm vom Turm!
Ein großer Geleitzug
schiebt schwer durch den Sturm!
Jetzt kommt es auf jedes Lederpäcken an
Vom Kaleu bis zum letzten Mann.

Refrain

III. Befehl an vierzig Mann!
Jetzt. Jungens geht es ran.
Alle Rohre klar und Feuer frei.
Wenn auch der Feind
nach S?d in wildem Zack entflieht
Unsre Aale, die gehen nicht vorbei.
Zuerst da kommt ein Tanker dran,
schon läuft der Torpedo
und z?ndet ihn an.
Da leuchtet am Himmel ein feuriges Fanal
Als ein Gruß unserm Admiral.

Refrain

The U-boat Song (I)

I. Day and night
We have not closed our eyes
On the great hunt on the high seas
Behind binoculars
And wet to the bone,
The watch peers out for tonnage,
The diesel engines sound, the sea grows rough,
The boat is so small
And the sea so large,
Now it depends on every hand
From the captain to the last man.

Refrain
Home is so far from here,
Home, we greet you,
For you we travel here,
The waiting death in the torpedo tube,
Straight to the enemy! U-boats forward.

II. Two weeks we've already stood
On deck and at diving stations
Valhalla still not in sight,
The days pass by
In perpetual sameness
And still no quarry.
Suddenly an alarm sounds from the tower!
A large convoy
Pushes hard through the storm! Now it depends on every hand
From the captain to the last man.

Refrain

III. An order to 40 men!
Now lads the chase is on.
All tubes free and ready to fire.
If the enemy also
In wild flight zigs to the south
Our eels do not pass by.
Now comes a tanker,
Already the torpedo runs
And sets it aflame.
There a flaming torch lights the heavens
As a greeting to our Admiral.

Refrain

Britanniens Macht vergeht,
Durch U-Bootmänner K?hnheit,
Großdeutschlands Stärke lebt.

Gar weit in's Meer hinaus.
U-Boote jagen

Zerreißt des Dampfers Schal'
Die letzte Fahrt zu machen:
Ist das nicht Todeswahl?

Refrain

The U-boat Song (II)

I. The hour has come
Britain's power fades
Through U-boat men's strength
Great Germany's power lives

Refrain
U-boats sail
Far, far into the sea
U-boats hunt
Torpedoes out of the tubes
|: Hunt England, England into death. :|

II. A bursting and a creaking
Breaks the steamer's hull
To make this last journey
Isn't that a choice of death?

Give me your hand, your white hand
Live well my sweetheart, live well my sweetheart
Live well, live well
Because we sail, because we sail
Because we sail against England, England.

It heralds the power of our realm,
Because we will no longer suffer
The laughter of the Englishmen.

Don't cry for me my sweetheart, and think:
For the fatherland, there flows his blood.

For right and freedom on the sea,

U-Bootsfahrer Lied

I. Ob Sturm uns bedroht hoch vom Norden,
Ob Heimweh im Herzen auch gl?ht;
Wir sind Kameraden geworden,
Und wenn es zur Hölle auch geht.
Matrosen die wissen zu sterben,
Wie immer das Schicksal auch spielt,
Und geht uns're Trommel in Scherben,
Dann singt uns der Nordwind ein Lied:

Refrain

Nach dem, den wir all' so geliebt;

Refrain

The U-boat Sailor's Song

I. Whether high storms threaten us from the North,
Whether homesickness glows in the heart;
We have become comrades
and when it also comes to hell
Sailors know how to die
As always fate also plays
And goes our drum in pieces
Then the north wind sings us a song:

Refrain
On a seamans grave
No roses bloom
On a seaman's grave
No flowers bloom
|: The single greeting is the white seagulls
And a tear which a small maiden cries. :|

II. So many of us saw death
But none of us cried
Sharp cliffs they brought us destruction
Meanwhile the boat went to the devil
The ice cold waves struck
All those that we so loved
And as death separated us
Then quietly we sang this song.

Refrain

Kameraden auf See

by Götz Otto Stoffregen

MP3 (verses I and II only) (713 kb)

I. |: Wir sind Kameraden auf See! :|

II. |: Wir sind Kameraden auf See! :|

III. |: Wir sind Kameraden auf See! :|

Comrades at Sea

I. |: We are comrades at sea! :|
Come maiden, now give me a parting kiss
Be brave and faithful when I must leave
And we sail away today.
We will come home again.
We stand like a rock windward and lee
We are comrades at sea!

II. |: We are comrades at sea! :|
The flag our leader gave us
We remain faithful to it to the grave
And do not worry about weather and storm
We stand in bunker and tower
We stand like a rock windward and lee
We are comrades at sea!

III. |: We are comrades at sea! :|
The flag which flutters proudly, leads us
It acknowledges us if we should die
It is our holiest possession
We protect it with our blood.
We stand like a rock windward and lee
We are comrades at sea!

Lili Marleen

MP3 (731 kb)

Melody: Norbert Schultze, 1938
Lyrics: Hans Leip 1915

I. Vor der Kaserne
Vor dem großen Tor
Stand eine Laterne
Und steht sie noch davor
So woll'n wir uns da wieder seh'n
Bei der Laterne wollen wir steh'n
|:Wie einst Lili Marleen. :|

II. Unsere beide Schatten
Sah'n wie einer aus
Daß wir so lieb uns hatten
Das sah man gleich daraus
Und alle Leute soll'n es seh'n
Wenn wir bei der Laterne steh'n
|: Wie einst Lili Marleen. :|

III.

IV. Deine Schritte kennt sie,
Deinen schönen Gang
Alle Abend brennt sie,
Doch mich vergaß sie lang
Und sollte mir ein Leids gescheh'n
Wer wird bei der Laterne stehen
|: Mit dir Lili Marleen? :|

V. Aus dem stillen Raume,
Aus der Erde Grund
Hebt mich wie im Traume
Dein verliebter Mund
Wenn sich die späten Nebel drehn
Werd' ich bei der Laterne steh'n
|: Wie einst Lili Marleen. :|

Lili Marleen

I. In front of the barracks
In front of the large gate
Stood a street lamp
And she before it again
So we want to see each other there again
We want to stand by the street lamp
|: As once did Lili Marleen. :|

II. Our two shadows
Seemed as one
That we so loved each other
One immediately saw it
And all people should see it
If we stand by the street light
|: As once did Lili Marleen. :|

III. The sentry calls already,
They blow for curfew
That can cost three days
Comrade I'm coming straight away
There we say our good-byes
How much I want to go with you
|: With you Lili Marleen. :|

IV. She knows your step
Your beautiful walk
All evening she is aflame
Yet she forgot me long
And should harm befall me
Who will stand by the street lamp
|: With you Lili Marleen? :|

V. From the silent space
From the bottom of the earth
Raises me as in a dream
Your beloved mouth
When the late mist drifts
I will stand by the street lamp
|: As once did Lili Marleen. :|

U-boat version of Lili Marleen

schwimmet unser U-Boot so langsam hin und her,
und wenn wir denn auf Tiefe gehn,
so hab´n wir meistens 'was gesehn,
|: wie bei dir, Lili Marlen :

II. Plötzlich ruft der Posten:
"Rauchfahne voraus!"

U-boat Version of Lili Marleen

I. On the Atlantic, on the wide sea,
Swims our U-boat so slowly to and fro,
And if we go to depth,
it's because we have usually seen something
|: As with you, Lili Marleen. :|

II. Suddenly shouts the guard:
"Smoke ahead!"
That can cost us three eels and still not quite do it,
Because should they slip past
For us no misfortune can arise from that
|: As with you, Lili Marleen. :|

III. When the bulkheads crack, and the lights go out,
And we sink deeper, that still does not finish us,
And if we then go deep,
We will stand in one thousand meters,
|: As with you, Lili Marleen. :|

IV. Yes, we are artists, we make nothing out of it,
And from every depth we climb comfortably out.
At a thousand meters it will be lovely,
If we have to walk home
|: As with you, Lili Marleen. :|

Title Unknown

I. Zieh Dir das Lederpäckchen an
Kamerad es geht in See
Schon springt der Diesel fauchend an
Kamerad da gibt es kein zurueck
Jetzt wollen wir ihn jagen
Den Engelaender schlagen
Da draussen auf der See
Wir sind die U-Bootsleute
Die grauen Wölfe
Auf grauer See

II. Vor uns da fährt
Der Tod daher
Und Schiffe sind unsere Beute
Heut sind wir hier
Und morgen sind wir dort
Unser Admiral gab uns ein Wort
Kameraden stehts
Dran denken
Angriff ran Versenken!

Title Unknown

I. Pull on your leathers
Comrade, we're going to sea
Already the diesels spring reeking to life
Comrade, there's no going back.
Now we want to hunt them,
Strike the British
There out on the sea.
We are the U-boat men
The grey wolves
On the grey sea.

II. Death sails there
Before us
And ships are our prey
Today we are here
And tomorrow we are there
Our Admiral gave us the word.
Comrade stand, and think
Attack, forward, sink!

Another version, contributed by Jack Harvey with the note that he received it from Horst Bredow some years ago, and was told that 'the words are by "Sdfr.(Lt.) Dr. Wolfgang Franck," perhaps the same man who was the author of Die Wölfe und die Admiral. The footnote at the end of the song says that "Das Lied wurde vom B.d.U. zum Lied der U-Bootwaffe bestimmt." The song is entitled "Ubootlied".

I. Zieh dir das Lederpäckchen an,
Kamerad, es geht in See!
Schon springt der Diesel fauchend an,
Kamerad, jetzt heißt es wieder "Ran!"
Jetzt wolln wir wieder sagen,
die Engelländer schlagen
da draußen auf der See.

Refrain
Wir sind die Ubootsleute,
die grauen Wölfe auf grauem Meer.
Vor uns weht fahl der Tod daher
und Schiffe sind unsere Beute.
Heut sind wir hier und morgen dort,
uns gab unser Admiral ein Wort:
Kameraden, stets dran denken:
Angriff, ran, versenken!

II. Auf fette Beute noch ein Glas!
Schon bald stehn wir am Feind
and suchen, bis wir ihn gefasst,
das Auge fest am Doppelglas.
Mit uns reist das Verderben.
Wir siegen oder sterben
mit unserm Boot vereint.

Refrain

III. Zum Angriff auf dreht nun das Boot.
Der Aal im Rohr liegt klar.
Und ob uns auch Vernichtung droht,-
wir hetzen Schiff um Schiff zu Tod!
Wenn Englands Dampfer sinken
und Siegeswimpel winken,
was schiert uns dann Gefahr!

Refrain

IV. Und wenn ein Boot nicht wiederkehrt
und blieb auf grauem Meer,
wir wissen daß es weiterfährt
und jetzt zur ew'gen Front gehört:
Wir wollen drum nicht klagen,
nur immer härter schlagen
den Feind auf weitem Meer.

Refrain

O du schöner Westerwald

MP3 (584 kb)

I. Heute wollen wir marschieren
Einen neuen Marsch probieren
|: In dem schönen Westerwald
Ja da pfeift der Wind so kalt. :|

Refrain
O du schöner Westerwald
?ber deine Höhen pfeift der Wind so kalt
Jedoch der kleinste Sonnenschein
Dringt tief in's Herz hinein.

II. Und die Gretel und der Hans
Geh'n des Sonntags gern zum Tanz
|: Weil das Tanzen Freude macht
Und das Herz im Liebe lacht. :|

Refrain

III. Ist das Tanzen dann vorbei
Gibt's gewöhnlich Keilerei
|: Und dem Bursch' den das nicht freut
Man sagt der hat kein Schneid. :|

I. Today we want to march
A new march to try
|: In the beautiful Westerwald
Yes, there the wind blows so cold. :|

Refrain
Oh you beautiful Westerwald
Over your heights the wind whistles so cold
However the least sunshine
Pierces the heart.

II. And the Hans and Gretal
Go happily dancing on Sundays
|: Because dancing is a joy
And the heart in love laughs. :|

Refrain

III. Is the dancing then past
Is there the usual row
|: And that does not please the lad
They say he has no edge. :|

Refrain

Must I Then

I. Got to go, got to go,
Got to blow this town,
Blow this town
And you, my dear, stay here.
When I'm back, when I'm back
When I'm back again, back again,
On your doorstep I'll appear.

|: Tho' I can't be with you all the time
My thoughts are with you, my dear
When I'm back, when I'm back
When I'm back again, back again,
On your doorstep I'll appear. :|

II. Don't you cry, don't you cry,
'cause I've got to go,
Got to go,
As if our love was now gone.
Tho' out there, tho' out there
Are so many girls, many girls,
I'll stay true to you alone.

|: Don't think when I see another girl
My love for you, it will be gone.
Tho' out there, tho' out there
Are so many girls, many girls,
I'll stay true to you alone. :|

III. In a year, in a year,
With grapes ripe on the vine,
Ripe on the vine,
Then, again it's here I'll be.
If by then, if by then,
I am still your beau, still your beau
We will wed, my bride you'll be.

|: |: In a year my time, it will be done
And then it is your's I will be.
If by then, if by then,
I am still your beau, still your beau,
We will wed, my bride you'll be. :|

J'attendrai

MP3 (verses I and III only) (702 kb)

Melody: Dino Oliveri
Lyrics: Louis Poterat
1937

J'attendrai

Ton retour

J'attendrai
Car l'oiseau qui s'enfuit vient chercher l'oubli
Dans son nid
Le temps passe et court
En battant tristement
Dans mon coeur si lourd
Et pourtant, j'attendrai
Ton retour
Et pourtant, j'attendrai
Ton retour Le temps passe et court
En battant tristement
Dans mon coeur si lourd
Et pourtant, j'attendrai
Ton retour

I Will Wait

I will wait
Day and night, I will always await
Your return
I will wait
For the bird that flees comes to search for love
In his nest
Time passes and runs
Beating sadly
In my heart so heavy
Even so, I will await
Your return.

The wind brings me
Faraway sounds
Before my door
I listen in vain
Alas, nothing more
Nothing more comes
I will wait
Day and night, I will always await
Your return

I will wait
For the bird that flees comes to search for love
In his nest
Time passes and runs
Beating sadly
In my heart so heavy
Even so, I will await
Your return.
Even so, I will await
Your return.
Time passes and runs
Beating sadly
In my heart so heavy
Even so, I will await
Your return.

Tipperary

wav (1,203 kb)

Refrain
It's a long way to Tipperary,
It's a long way to go.
It's a long way to Tipperary
To the sweetest girl I know.
Goodbye Piccadilly,
Farewell Leicester Square,
It's a long long way to Tipperary,
But my heart lies there.

I. Up to mighty London came
An Irish lad one day,
All the streets were paved with gold,
So everyone was gay!
Singing songs of Picadilly,
Strand, and Leicester Square,
'Til Paddy got excited and
He shouted to them there:

Refrain

II. Paddy wrote a letter
To his Irish Molly O',
Saying, "Should you not receive it,
Write and let me know!
If I make mistakes in "spelling,
Molly dear", said he,
"Remember it's the pen, that's bad,
Don't lay the blame on me".

Refrain

III. Molly wrote a neat reply
To Irish Paddy O',
Saying, "Mike Maloney wants
To marry me, and so
Leave the Strand and Piccadilly,
Or you'll be to blame,
For love har fairly drove me silly,
Hoping you're the same!"

Refrain
