Oblt. Gerhard Remus went through U-boat training from Nov 1940 to March 1941. From April to Oct 1941 Remus served as the First Watch Officer (1WO) on the U-652 (Oblt. Georg-Werner Fraatz). He served on the boat for two war patrols during which they sank 1 small ship and damaged 3 for a total of 20,825 tons. He left the boat in Oct 1941 (Busch & Röll, 1999).

From Oct to Nov 1941 Remus went through U-boat Commander training before taking command of the U-34, a retired front line boat, on 20 Nov 1941. He left the boat in June 1942 to take command of the U-566. After two patrols in the Atlantic he left the boat to lead the torpedo training attack of the 24th Flotilla. From Oct 1944 to Feb 1946 Remus led training at the 24th flotilla. He then joined the torpedo attack div of the 26th flotilla until April 1945 (Busch & Röll, 1999).

At the end of the war Remus commanded the new Elektro boat U-2364 which he scuttled on 5 May 1945 at Gelting Bay (Niestlé, 1998). For the last few days of the war he joined the staff of U-boat Command. Kplt. Gerhard Remus was detained by the Allied, but released on 3 Aug 1945 (Busch & Röll, 1999).
