Excellent and very informative, both technically and personally. The detail puts you on the boats in the storms and the battles. Had to keep in mind that the narrative is about actual events. Understanding the Battle of the North Atlantic is what you will get.

This is one of the best books I've ever read about WWII and in particularly the war in the North Atlantic.To most people WWII is rapidly becoming something that happened in the distant past and not something they personally remember.However ;I still have many personal memories .since I was born in 1935 and was 10 years old when the war ended.I grew up in Nova Scotia,and for about 5 years ,from when I was 5 to 10 ,the war was very close and real.and its presence was always around us.At school we bought War Saving Stamps at 25 cents,had scrap aluminum drives where we brought anything made of aluminium from home that was collected and used fto make war machines and equipment,we had air raid drills and each student had their own gas mask hanging in the classroom in case of gas attacks. We were all trained to report any strange talk to authorities as German spies were known to be around and actually captured.Soldiers Sailors & Airmen were always being seen as there were Army Camps Military Airports and Naval Bases nearby.Troop trains went through our town bring forces from the central and western provinces and the windows were covered up.Towns would have Air Raid Drills ,where all lights were turned off and Wardens patrolled the neighborhoods.On any visits to Halifax,you would see large numbers of navy and civilian ships in the harbor assembling to carry troops and equipment in convoys to Europe.Airplanes were commonly seen flying in practice .and sounds of guns were heard from army camps.There were continual news about the progress of the war and reports of local people killed in Europe or lost at sea with their ships were common.I even remember the loss of a neighbor's wife who was lost while going to visit her husband when the un-armed car ferry going from Sydney to Newfoundland was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-Boat.One of my classmate's father was on the Minesweeper that sunk a German U-Boat that got trapped inside the submarine nets in Halifax Harbor.As I read this book,and about many of the RCN ship names;I still remember seeing those names on the hats of the sailors.as they walked about town.The newspapers,radio and movie Newsreels always had war news to keep everyone informed.Also,though it is only slightly mentioned in the book;my Grandfather died as a result of searching for family members who died in the Halifax Explosion of 1917.,which was by the way, the largest man-made explosion up until the Atom Bomb of Hiroshima.ended the war in Japan.
At the time ,everyone regardless of age, knew who the enemy was,sacrificed and endured rationing and supported the war effort.There was no such thing as dissenters , traitors or conscientious objectors as we saw in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
All this was what took place with the civilians;but the real war took place on the battlefields of Eujrope and on the ocean between North America and Europe.
This book does an excellent job of telling what the navies of Germany and the Allies went through.It does this by following the experiences of two ships,the RCN St.Croix and the German U-Boat ,U305 and their crews .
. The book is extremely well researched and filled with details.It reads like a novel but in fact everything is true and verified as much as possible from actual records.
