A true clash of Giants.

When HMS Hood met Bismarck in the Denmark Strait, it was not just a naval engagement, it was a fight for existence on the part of England. The flow of supplies and raw materials into english ports was critical to british survival. Bismarck's appearance in the north atlantic was specifically designed to stem that flow of goods. The deficiencies in Hoods armoured protection have often been described. Although gun for gun, Hood and Bismarck were well matched, structurally Hood was an inferior ship. The naval battle proved that fact. Bismarck sailed on to her own demise, courtesy of an archaic piece of military hardware. It is quite sad that so many young men lost their lives in this naval battle. But it is the price nations paid to preserve their freedom. JRV

This book gives an excellent run-up to the occurrences on Hood before and during her final battle. If any of the three survivors have ever written about it, than I'm yet to see it.
Bismarck has provided a good many eyewitness reports which have been published over the years. Mullenheim-Rechberg's book is one of those.
Other reviewers have bemoaned the fact that there are no illustrations, etc - and which I must support. The underwater photographs supply very little to NO indication as to Hood's present state. It would be nice to see Ken Marschall-type artwork, but that will cost a great deal.
Second best would be simple pen drawings like Janusz Skulski's, "The Battleship Yamato".
The author tries - in vain - to explain precisely various technical and directional aspects in which he hopelessly fails sometimes - giving credence - again - that a simple picture paints a thousand words.
One can only hope that subsequent publications will address these shortcomings, and as a technical designer, illustrator and artist, I would happily give me services free of charge.

This book has some excellent wreck and period photos. The text deals with both the search for the wrecks of the Hood and Bismarck and gives a brief history of both ships. It clings to the notion that the fatal shot taken by HMS Hood penetrated the deck armor which is unlikely as the range between the two ships dictates a shot angle of no more than 14 degrees and possible a little as ten degrees. It also concludes that the bow separation on the wreck of the Hood was caused by a magazine explosion when there was no magazine in that area. I could pick on a couple of other items but even if you are into the minutiae as I am, the book is still worthwhile and a good addition to any nautical library.

This book deals both with the battle between the Hood and the Bismarck and the discovery of their wrecks.
The battle which took place on May 24,1941saw the Hood sink within a few minutes with only 3 survivors while the Bismarck was sunk 3 days later after a great chase and as demanded by Churchill.
In 2001 both wrecks were found and documentaries were made for Chanel 4.
This is a well written and researched account of the last days of these 2 great battleships and what was found when the wrecks were explored.
Excellent pictures and illustrations and a short bibliography.
