There are some excellent photographs in the pages but how one wishes that the publisher had avoided spoiling many of the images by unnecessarily placing them across two pages, so that the binding ruins the image and hides some of the detail.
Also, there is an annoying lack of identification of the ships in the photographs, leaving the reader with more work than need be the case. The excellent large photograph of a convoy on the contents page shows what the caption calls "a sloop"; it clearly shows pennant number U56 and appears to be a Black Swan class sloop, yet the author is happy to leave the reader unenlightened (and I can't identify it either)! He offers a photograph of a line of British battleships but does not even name the class, and the same for a photo of American battleships on manoeuvres. This is all rather lazy stuff. Yet, for other photographs, there is extraordinary detail in the captions. On another page, all three photographs have the bows of the frigates clipped - reminiscent of poor family holiday snaps and not what one expects from a decent naval historian.
There are some real bloopers in the text, too. On page 102, he claims that the U-Boat ace Otto Kretschmer died on 17 March 1941; well, one might wonder about whom the newspaper obituaries were written in 1998! The caption on page 179 advises that the Amerigo Vespucci is the left of the two sailing ships, yet the name Cristoforo Colombo is clearly visible on the ship's stern! With simple mistakes like these, one wonders how many others there are that go unnoticed by even well-informed readers.
Nevertheless, there are some excellent photographs in this book and even if the captions are suspect, the reader can have some fun trying to identify the subjects more accurately. So, what is that aircraft carrier in the final photograph - the author doesn't say and both he and the publisher clearly had given up by this stage and decided that going to press was more important than a decent production.
It's not an expensive book and is good value and is worth purchasing for the lesser-known photographs and subjects covered. However, this ship is surely spoiled for a ha'porth o'tar. One does wonder why authors and publishers let themselves down like this ... caveat emptor!
