U. S. Submarines in World War II: An Illustrated History of the Pacific Paperback – August 1, 1996

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 20 ratings

For more than sixty years the wartime secrecy surrounding U.S. submarines obscured their decisive role in the Allied victory in World War II. Submarines, comprising just 2% of the U.S. Navy, sank 55% of Japan's merchant ships and one-third of its navy. Now U.S. Submarines in World War II brings to life this extraordinary American undersea campaign with maps, photographs, unique drawings, and web animations. From Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay this book provides a periscope's view of the patrols, the losses, and the battles that broke the Japanese Empire and gave the United States the greatest naval victory in history.

Review

U.S. Submarines in World War II distills a great deal of information about American submarines, their crews, their patrols, their failures, and their successes into a very readable primer, liberally illustrated with nicely executed diagrams, simple but effective maps, and useful photos.... This is a very interesting and well-done introduction to the submarine campaign in the Pacific with a nicely laid-out, graphic-intensive design. --Stone and Stone - Second World War Books Website

In this highly researched work, Larry Kimmett and Margaret Regis have created a visual record of the U.S. submarine campaign against the island empire of Japan. The book concentrates on war patrols and island engagements across the Pacific Ocean, where most U.S. submarines fought and all confirmed sinkings by U.S. subs took place.... These stories, firsthand observations from war patrols, battle photos, and Margaret Regis' outstanding graphics combine to make a one-of-a-kind and long-awaited record of this incredible chapter in U.S. naval history. --World War II Magazine

This book is a gripping presentation of the saga of the Fleet Boats in the Pacific from 1941-45... If you're interested in Fleet Boats or WWII Pacific, this is definitely a book you're going to want. --The SubCommittee REPORT

This is a great presentation about our subs in the Pacific during WWII because of its format: a page or two for individual episodes, mechanical and physical details, people, sorties, strategies, derring-do, etc. With glorious pictures too. It's the book for the reader who wants to open it up and get interesting presentations one, two, three . . . however many you're up for at the time. It's outside the "tome" syndrome that can bog you down in spite of its praiseworthy complete and extensive coverage. Even if you want the tome, this is a fine companion book. Plus, who doesn't like pictures? It's more coffee-table size than the usual book, another advantage.

This book contains diagrams, photographs, and maps which explain the value of USA submarines during world war II. It discusses the pathways submarines took in victory and defeat, using maps. It makes excellent value as a book -- explaining the role of submarines in our NAVY without getting into technical details. For example, there were photographs of subs, followed by a cut-away diagram of the inside compartments. A realistic view of the torpedo room (a photo.) Descriptions of the various locking doors (also with a photo,) and the gun room (also with a photo.) It was great to see the insides of an officer's cabin (with a photo,) and the radio room (with a photo.) Great starter book.

This book inspired me to learn more about the subject matter. So, this book was perfect for me.

No dislikes at all. An uncle served on USS Seawolf (SS197) and I served in USN years ago. Worked on submarines at the New London Sub Base in Connecticut and have always loved them. Great photos and mini-biographies of these WWII boats when they looked frightening to our enemies. A Good Book!

I thought I'd get a book with a lot of photos that I could use as references for 1/72 models of Gato subs. Well, this book has some of those...but...even better it is just full of stories and patrol details and just a myriad of information that is going to take weeks to digest. It is so much MORE than what I expected. If you want good detail for modeling, then the Squadron/Signal publication is your best option. If you'd like a little more than that....this is an EXCELLENT option!.

What a fine book about the US submarine service in WW2. Great pictures and short synopsis of several of the ships and crews. I am really enjoying this and expect to pick it up several times a year to check something of just to go over things again.
