Product Description

Based on Tom Clancy's bestseller, "The Hunt for Red October" seethes with high-tech excitement and the tension of men who hold Doomsday in their hands. A new, technologically superior Soviet nuclear sub, the Red October, is heading for the U.S. coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius. The American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack. A lone CIA analyst has a different idea: he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it. The entire Russian naval and air commands are trying to find him, too. 1990 135 min

"This submarine ain't big enough for your lips and my accent."

"This submarine ain't big enough for your lips and my accent."
SPOILERS... maybe? This was a fun movie to watch. Definitely not a nuanced political assessment of Cold War politics but good drama, good story and so awesome to watch the submarines scooting around under water. Also, what a treat to see Dr. Crusher out of uniform and enjoy James Early Jones's dulcet tones. I miss that man. Keep your eye out for submarine super sleuth Seaman Jones, my favorite character who saves the day via his ear hole after raiding the 99 cent reading glasses bin at Walgreens. Dr. Alan Grant of Jurassic Park actually attempts a Russian accent as Connery's second in command and confirmed my suspicions of my own psychic powers when I predicted perfectly his last line. Test yourself @ 2:00:14 on the Amazon Prime version!A few "say what?" moments that I chose to roll with: 1) pretty campy to have all the Soviets played by American/British/Scottish actors. I like the cinematic world post-Inglorious Bastards where language barriers are embraced and add an extra tension to the narratives. Yeah, sub titles are extra work but if you want to gain insight into the human experience from your movies it's worth the sweat. 2) In their own corners Connery & Baldwin were fantastique but when they finally got together in the last few scenes their bro-ey chemistry obliterated the simmering tension that made the rest of the movie. Those guys need to do a comedy together. Or a Broadway play. 3) Baldwin's resting Blue Steel face. In those close ups meant to convey concerned reflection all I can hear is, "Lemon!". I always thought that lip purse was affected but in fact... that's just his face.In sum, perfect for a night of soothing entertainment. If you can get down with ridiculous accents, cool water machines, naval uniforms and chest hair, this is a worthwhile watch.
