24 Aug 1943. U-340 rescued five German airmen from a rubber dinghy in the North Atlantic about 140 miles west of Vigo, Spain at 0335hrs. They were from the Focke-Wulf Fw200C-5 WNr 0214 (7./KG 40, F8+NT) which had been shot down and was forced to ditch at 1800hrs on 23 August. One crewman was lost.

U-340 rescued five Luftwaffe aircrew off Spain on 25 August. Shortly afterwards the boat was attacked by an aircraft. One man died and five were wounded. The boat suffered minor damage.
