The boat was attacked by a British aircraft. The boat dived to 160 meters and suffered some damages.
16 Nov, 1939
Two British destroyers, HMS Echo and HMS Wanderer. The boat was pushed down to 557 feet, by far the deepest U-boat had ever gone before she escaped. (Sources: Blair, vol 1, page 119)

Update
The wreck was located on 3 March 1993 by the Norwegian submarine Skolpen. The boat is lying at a depth of 300 meters.
Men lost from U-boats
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-49 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.

There was another U-49 in World War One
