In April 1945 Joachim Sauerbier was assigned to take command of the U-324 stationed at Bergen, Norway. He boarded the U-251 at Kiel, Germany as a passenger for Norway (Busch & Röll, 1999). The boat was sunk on 19 April 1945 by British and Norwegian aircraft south of Göteborg, Sweden (Niestlé, 1998). Oblt Sauerbier died on the boat when she sank (Busch & Röll, 1999).
