Werner Schulte joined the Kriegsmarine in 1937. From March 1938 to April 1940 he served as gunnery and Div. officer on the light cruiser Köningsberg. He then served on the staff of Naval Commander at Bergen, Norway until Oct 1940 when he joined the U-boat force.
His U-boat training lasted from Oct 1940 to March 1941 when he began his U-boat Commander training with the 24th flotilla, finishing the course in April. In May Schulte was sent as Commander in training on one patrol on the U-98 (Robert Gysae) where they sank 3 large ships for a total of over 23,000 GRT. He was then sent to U-boat familiarization (Baubelehrung) in July before taking command of his boat, the new U-582, at Hamburg.
On 4 patrols with the U-582, including one in US waters, they sank 6 ships for almost 39,000 GRT.
Kapitänleutnant Werner Schulte died along with his entire crew of 46 men when the U-582 was sunk by a American Catalina aircraft on 5 Oct 1942 south-west of Iceland (Niestlé, 1998). After his death he was promoted to Korvettenkapitän with seniority from 1 Oct 1942 (Busch and Röll, 1999).
