Personal information
When the boat was sunk it was reported that about 15 survivors were in the water but Giersberg, the captain, was the only survivor. He suffered a broken leg and was rescued by the destroyer Orwell. (Blair, Clay. 1998. Hitler's U-boat War, vol 2, page 430).
