
Knights Cross with oak leaves and crossed swords

Introduced on July 15, 1941 this award was meant for recipients of the Oak leaves who showed further acts of courage. A pair of crossed swords at 40 degrees was added below the Oak Leaves cluster. Only 150 of these were awarded.

Korvkpt. Otto Kretshmer was in British POW camp (after being captured when his U-99 was scuttled on March 17, 1941) when he was given the award and it was smuggled to him and presented there.
