The German submarine U-314 was sunk in the Barents Sea south-east of Bear Island, Norway, in position 73º41'N, 24º30'E, by depth charges from the British destroyers HMS Whitehall (Lt.Cdr. P.J. Cowell, DSC, RN) and HMS Meteor (Lt.Cdr. D.J.B. Jewitt, RN).
