Around 0245A/24, ' Force H ', made up of the battlecruiser HMS Renown (Capt. R.R. McGrigor, RN, flying the flag of Vice-Admiral J.F. Somerville, KCB, DSO, RN), aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal (Capt. L.E.H. Maund, RN), light cruiser HMS Sheffield (Capt. C.A.A. Larcom, RN) and the destroyers HMS Faulknor (Capt. A.F. de Salis, RN), HMS Foresight (Cdr. J.S.C. Salter, RN), HMS Forester (Lt.Cdr. E.B. Tancock, RN), HMS Foxhound (Cdr. G.H. Peters, DSC, RN), HMS Fury (Lt.Cdr. T.C. Robinson, RN) and HMS Hesperus (Lt.Cdr. A.A. Tait, RN) departed Gibraltar for operation in the Atlantic to try to intercept the German battleship Bismarck and heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen.

At 0800A/25, the destroyers parted company.

Around 2030A/29, ' Force H ', HMS Renown (Capt. R.R. McGrigor, RN, flying the flag of Vice-Admiral J.F. Somerville, KCB, DSO, RN), HMS Ark Royal (Capt. L.E.H. Maund, RN) and HMS Sheffield (Capt. C.A.A. Larcom, RN) made rendezvous at 0800A/29 with the destroyers HMS Faulknor (Capt. A.F. de Salis, RN), HMS Forester (Lt.Cdr. E.B. Tancock, DSC and Bar, RN), HMS Fury (Lt.Cdr. T.C. Robinson, RN) and HMS Wishart (Cdr. E.T. Cooper, RN). At 1605A/29, HMS Forester and HMS Fury were detached to hunt a submarine that had been reported further to the west. ' Force H ', minus the two destroyers that had been detached, arrived at Gibraltar around 2030A/29. (1)

Around 0800A/16, the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal (Capt. L.E.H. Maund, RN) and the destroyers HMS Gurkha (Cdr. C.N. Lentaigne, RN), HMS Legion (Cdr. R.F. Jessel, RN) and HMS Lance (Lt.Cdr. R.W.F. Northcott, RN) departed Gibraltar for exercises to the east of Gibraltar.

They were followed around 1100A/16 by the battleship HMS Nelson (Capt. T.H. Troubridge, RN, flying the flag of Vice-Admiral J.F. Somerville, KCB, DSO, RN) and the destroyers HMS Cossack (Capt. E.L. Berthon, DSC, RN), HMS Zulu (Cdr. H.R. Graham, DSO, RN), HMS Fury (Lt.Cdr. T.C. Robinson, RN) and HMS Foresight (Cdr. J.S.C. Salter, RN).

HMS Nelson, HMS Cossack, HMS Gurkha, HMS Legion and HMS Lance returned to harbour around 2330A/16.

HMS Ark Royal, HMS Zulu, HMS Fury and HMS Foresight returned to harbour around 1330A/17. (1)

Around 0700A/13, the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal (Capt. L.E.H. Maund, RN) departed Gibraltar for exercises to the east of Gibraltar. She was escorted by the destroyers HMS Cossack (Capt. E.L. Berthon, DSC, RN), HMS Sikh (Cdr. G.H. Stokes, DSC, RN), HMS Lance (Lt.Cdr. R.W.F. Northcott, RN) and the escort destroyer HMS Croome (Lt.Cdr. J.D. Hayes, RN).

They returned to Gibraltar around 1845A/13. (1)
