History Built as Hessa; 1934 renamed Bestum

Early Nov, 1941, the Bestum run aground near Shipwash and was refloated on 22 Nov, 1941 and was being towed to Harwick, when she was damaged by a bomb from a German Do 217 aircraft from KG 2. After about a week she was refloated again and towed to Harwich for repairs.

Notes on loss In an attack on the morning of 11 Sep, 1942, U-433 missed two escorts and attacked at 04.08 hours a burning ship. The SOE (Senior Officer Escort) reported a torpedo hit on the Bestum, which had stopped to pick up survivors from the torpedoed Swedish steam merchant Garm. But it is doubtful that the Bestum was hit (It is possible that U-433 had hit the damaged Garm). The Norwegian ship reached Reykjavik three days later with 14 survivors of the Garm on board.
