History Built as Swedish Ingrid Brodin for Erik Brodin, Stockholm; 1921 renamed Eidshorn, 1927 renamed Ferro, 1929 renamed Kvernaas

On 29 Sep, 1939, the Kvernaas was stopped and searched by the German destroyer Wilhelm Heidkamp in 59°31N/06°18E. The ship was en route from Sundsvall to Amsterdam via Velzen with a cargo of 2585 tons of cellulose and was instructed to sail to Kiel. The freighter was stopped again at 00.59 hours on 30 September, this time by the German destroyer Hermann Künne. A prize crew was placed on board and the ship brought to Kiel, but the ship with cargo was released on 13 October.

Notes on loss At 02.05 hours on 17 Feb, 1940, the unescorted Kvernaas (Master Ivar Sørensen) was hit by one torpedo from U-10 and sank within five minutes four miles northwest of Schouwen Bank, Netherlands. The crew abandoned ship in two lifeboats and was picked up after 4 hours by the Dutch Oranjepolden. The vessel was en route to London, but turned back and landed the men at the pilot station in Hoek van Holland the next day. The maritime hearings were held in Rotterdam (it was thought that the ship struck a mine) and a couple of weeks later the crew travelled to Amsterdam. From there they were flown to Sweden, then travelled on to Norway by train.
