| Notes on loss | At 07.54 hours on 24 Feb, 1943, the Ingria (Master Fredrik Ditlefsen) in station #83 of convoy ON-166 was struck on the port side between #4 hold and the engine room by one FAT torpedo from U-600 (Zurmühlen). The master, 31 crew members and five gunners abandoned the stopped vessel in two lifeboats when the deck was awash. At 08.13 hours, U-628 fired a spread of four FAT torpedoes, followed by a stern shot two minutes later and heard five explosions, thus claiming two ships sunk and another damaged. However, the only ship hit at that time was the damaged Ingria sinking by the stern about 40 minutes after the first hit. The other explosions heard were probably depth charges from HMCS Rosthern (K 169) (Lt R.J.G. Johnson, RCNVR), which picked up the survivors afterwards and landed them at St. Johns on 27 February. | ||
