| Notes on loss | At 20.15 hours on 30 Mar, 1943, U-596 attacked the convoy ET-16 west of Algiers and reported five hits on two ships, but the Italians reported hits on three ships. The Hallanger and Fort a la Corne were sunk by this attack. The master, 43 crew members and ten gunners from the Fort a la Corne (Master Reginald A. Grove) were picked up by a British escort vessel and landed at Gibraltar. | ||
