Notes on loss About 03.30 hours on 12 Jun, 1943, the unescorted Palima (Master J.H. Kubinek) was hit by one torpedo from U-97 and sank rapidly. 24 crew members and two British gunners were lost. 37 crew members and two British gunners rescued themselves on a few rafts that had floated free. During the day they were spotted by an aircraft, picked up by a large whaleboat and a Greek destroyer and landed at Beirut the same day.
