History

Built as Embaneft, 1934 renamed Emba

On 29 Jan, 1942, the Emba was bombed and heavily damaged by German aircraft of Kamysh-Burun in the Black Sea. The ship was not completely repaired and used as storeship in some harbours, before she was towed to Suchumi in May 1943.
The tanker had been mined and damaged while in tow on 14 Feb, 1943.

Notes on loss At 18.46 hours on 30 Jul, 1943, U-24 fired two torpedoes into the harbour of Suchumi. Both torpedoes struck the Emba, which was moored at the quay off the Suchumi Lighthouse as a stationary storeship and was completely destroyed.

* Estimated position shown here is based on positions of losses in a roughly the same German grid code. It may be a bit off but should give a good idea as to where the attack took place.
