History

built as British Farnworth for Dalgliesh Steam Shipping Co, Newcastle; 1924 renamed Illinois for Harlem SS Co, Newcastle; 1926 sold to France for Cie Generale Transatlantique, Le Havre; 1934 renamed Greek Mount Pentelikon for Kulukundis Shipping Co SA, Pirĉus; 1939 renamed German Gloria for Orion Schiffahrts GmbH, Rostock.

On 21 Oct, 1939, the Gloria was captured by the British cruiser HMS Sheffield (24) (Capt E. de Renouf CVO) southeast of Iceland and taken to Leith. The vessel was renamed Empire Conveyor by Ministry of Shipping (MOS).

Notes on loss On 20 Jun, 1940, the unescorted Empire Conveyor (Master Finlay Black MacIntyre) was torpedoed and sunk about 50 miles south of Barra Head, Hebrides. Three crew members were lost. The master and 37 crew members were picked up by the British destroyer leader HMS Campbell (D 60) (Lt T.F. Taylor) and landed at Liverpool.
The attacker was probably U-122, which was lost on the patrol and did not report her successes.
