| Notes on loss | At 02.12 hours on 24 Feb, 1941, U-97 fired two torpedoes at the convoy OB-289 southwest of the Faroe Islands and reported one ship sunk, but in fact the Mansepool and Jonathan Holt were hit and sunk. The master, 38 crew members, two gunners and ten passengers from the Jonathan Holt (Master William Stephenson) were lost. Two crew members and one passenger were picked up by HMS Petunia (K 79) (LtCdr G.V. Legassisk, RNR) and landed at Stornoway. Two crew members and one passenger were picked up by the British rescue ship Copeland (Master W.J. Hartley, DSC) and landed at Greenock. | ||
