At 09.55 hours on 14 Aug, 1941, U-126 spotted the Sud, a straggler from convoy HG-70 and tried to get into an attack position. In the meantime, the Italian submarine Marconi (Cdr Pollina) first unsucessfully attacked the same ship at 12.01 hours with a torpedo and then shelled her with the 100mm deck gun, scoring hits with about 25 rounds. Shortly after 15.15 hours, the U-boat also opened fire with the deck gun and scored eight hits with 33 rounds fired. Both submarines ceased fire as the freighter began to burn, but the ship did not sink and Pollina refused to use another torpedo for the small ship, so Bauer fired a stern torpedo at 16.01 hours and hit Sud near the aft mast causing her to settle within two minutes. The survivors were picked up by the Portuguese steam merchant Alferrarede.
