Notes on event

In the early morning of 28 Dec 1941, U-75 attacked convoy ME-8 and reported two ships with 9000 grt sunk and another damaged. This was the last radio message from the U-boat because she was sunk after a hunt of several hours by the escorts of convoy. However, only the Volo (Master George Rowland Whitefield MBE) had been torpedoed and sunk about 45 miles northwest of Mersa Matruh, Egypt. The master, 20 crew members and three gunners were lost. Nine crew members and five gunners were picked up by the British landing craft HMS LCT-11 and landed at Alexandria.

On boardWe have details of 24 people who were on board
