| Notes on loss | At 05.44 hours on 26 Jun, 1942, the unescorted Putney Hill (Master Donald McWilliam Hughson) was hit by one torpedo from U-203 about 450 miles east-northeast of Puerto Rico. The U-boat then sank the ship with 53 rounds from the deck gun. Two crew members and one gunner were lost. The master, 29 crew members and five gunners were picked up after ten days by HMS Saxifrage (K 04) (LtCdr R.P. Chapman) and landed at San Juan, Puerto Rico. | ||
