Notes on loss At 15.53 hours on 16 Sep, 1939, the Rudyard Kipling was sunk by scuttling charges from U-27 about 100 miles west of Donegal, Ireland. The Germans took the crew on board, provided them with food and warm clothes and towed their lifeboats towards land. After eight hours the men were placed back in the boats within five miles from the Irish coast.
