At 07.14 hours on 23 Feb, 1943, U-628 (Hasenschar) fired a spread of two FAT torpedoes at the convoy ON-166. One torpedo damaged Winkler in station #63, which was later sunk by U-223 (Wächter) and the other hit the Glittre in station #75, which was later sunk by U-603.

The Glittre (Master Ivar Kvadsheim) was struck on the port side in the engine room, settled by the stern and abandoned by the crew after 20 minutes in two lifeboats. Two men on watch below and the cook in his cabin were killed by the explosion. At 08.42 hours, the wreck sank after being hit by two coups de grâce from U-603. The other torpedoed ship offered to pick up the survivors but they wisely refused. The master, 28 crew members and five gunners were picked up after about three hours by HMS Dianthus (K 95) (T/A/LtCdr N.F. Israel, RNR) and landed at St. Johns on 26 February.
