| Notes on loss | At 21.50 hours on 5 May 1943, U-266 fired four torpedoes at the convoy ONS-5 south of Cape Farewell and reported one ship sunk, one probably sunk and that two detonations had been heard. In fact the three ships Selvistan, Gharinda and Bonde in stations #91, #101 and #84 were hit within three minutes and sank. One crew member and five gunners from the Selvistan (Master George Edward Miles) were lost. The master, 38 crew members and one gunner were picked up by HMS Tay (K 232) (LtCdr Robert E. Sherwood) and landed at St. Johns. | ||
