| Notes on loss | At 00.22 hours on 21 Sep, 1943, U-952 fired a Gnat at an escort of the convoy ON-202 and heard after three minutes a detonation, followed by sinking noises. The HMS Polyanthus (K 47) (Lt J.G. Aitken, RNR, lost) was searching behind the convoy for survivors of HMCS St. Croix (I 81) and sank immediately after being hit. The HMS Itchen (K 227) picked up one survivor (SLt Atkins), but he died when the frigate was torpedoed and sunk two days later by U-666 (Engel). | ||
