| History | HMS Obdurate (G 39) was completed in September 1942. In December 1942 she was damaged in a gun duel with the German heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper while escorting the convoy JW-51B. Post-war: | ||
| Notes on loss | At 18.33 hours on 25 Jan, 1944, HMS Obdurate (G 39) (LtCdr C.E.L. Sclater, DSO and Bar, RN) was damaged by a Gnat from U-360 while escorting the convoy JW-56A to North Russia. The destroyer just had detected the surfaced U-boat by radar and prepared to attack when she was hit. The torpedo apparently detonated in some distance from the hull but disabled the starboard screw and flooded its shaft. The damaged destroyer was missed by a coup de grāce from the U-boat at 18.44 hours and later managed to rejoin the convoy on one shaft. On 27 January, HMS Obdurate (G 39) arrived at Murmansk under her own power and after temporary repairs left for Scapa Flow on 11 February, arriving after five days. When permanent repairs were made at Tyne the damages were found to be more severe than initially thought, both main engines and the outer bottom plating on starboard had to be replaced. The destroyer returned to service in March 1945. | ||
