Notes on loss At 17.47 hours on 7 Sep, 1939, the unescorted Gartavon (Master George Smith Hunter) was sunk by gunfire by U-47 northwest of Cape Ortegal. All hands were picked up by the Swedish motor tanker Castor and landed at Horta, Azores on 11 September.
