Attacks on U-565 during this patrol
5 Oct 1941
At 11.02 hours, the inbound boat was attacked by a Blenheim (1404 Met Flt RAF/A, pilot P/O Jack Coleman) in the Bay of Biscay. About 30 minutes earlier, the aircraft had unsuccessfully attacked U-563 and was searching for this U-boat when U-565 was spotted and attacked from ahead. The 250lb A/S bomb dropped actually hit the net deflector and conning tower of the crash-diving U-boat and bounced off as a dud. The aircrew apparently misinterpreted the rapid dive of the U-boat at a heavy angle and claimed a sinking, while she in fact escaped without damage. (Sources: KTB U-565/ADM 199-1782)
