Attacks on U-566 during this patrol

26 Apr 1943
At 22.44 hours, the outbound boat was attacked from the port bow by a Leigh Light equipped Wellington Mk.XII aircraft (172 Sqn RAF/R, pilot Sgt Alex Coumbis) after being located by radar in the Bay of Biscay. U-566 immediately crash dived, but six depth charges straddled the bow, causing a leak in the foreship and damaging a diving tank. At 23.55 hours, the U-boat was forced to surface due to the damage and unable to dive fought off several approaches of another Wellington (172 Sqn RAF/M) by AA fire until 00.27 hours. The aircraft had no depth charges left after an unsuccessful attack on U-103 and returned to base after exchanging gunfire. U-566 had to break off the patrol and was later escorted back to port by four Ju88 aircraft and surface ships. (Sources: Franks, KTBs, ADM199/1784)
