Horses

The first Commander of U-636 was KL Hans Hildebrandt, born in Bremen. Bremen is a city in Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony).

This emblem is represents a decoration which can to this day be seen on the roofs of farmhouses in Northern Germany, especially in Lower Saxony. It sits on the top of the gable. The horses were holy to the germanic tribe of the Saxons. The coat of Arms of Lower Saxony is a White Horse on a red field. Germans do not eat horse meat. These decoration probably was intended to deflect evil powers from the house.
