Notes on loss At 01.39 hours on 25 Aug, 1942, U-605 fired a spread of four torpedoes and one minute later the stern torpedo at the convoy ON-122 southeast of Cape Farewell. Three detonations were heard and one burning and one sinking ship were observed. Schütze reported one ship sunk and two damaged. In fact, the Katvaldis and Sheaf Mount were sunk.

The master, 27 crew members and three gunners from the Sheaf Mount (Master Ralph Sydney De Gruchy) were lost. 21 crew members and six gunners were picked up by the Stockport (Master Thomas Ernest Fea OBE) and landed at Halifax on 1 September.
