| Notes on loss | At 07.41 hours on 23 Feb, 1943, the Athelprincess (Master Egerton Gabriel B. Martin OBE), a straggler from convoy UC-1, was hit by two torpedoes from U-522 and sank west of Madeira. One crew member was lost. The master, 42 crew members and seven gunners were picked up by HMS Weston (U 72) (Cdr L.F. Durnford-Slater), transferred to USS Hilary P. Jones (DD 427) and landed at San Juan, Puerto Rico. | ||
