Notes on loss

At 17.54 hours on 27 Jul, 1943, U-255 opened fire at the Akademik Shokalskij with all weapons and three hits from the deck gun caused the ship to sink at 18.27 hours off Sporyji Navolok. Eight crew members were killed by the shelling and three others died of exhaustion. The survivors were picked up by the Soviet motorboat Poljarnik on 2 August.
