Noteable events involving Murphy include:
21 Oct 1943
USS Murphy was rammed off New York by the tanker Bulkoil. The forward section of the ship sank, taking 36 officers and men with it. The stern section was towed to the New York Navy yard where a new forward section was fitted. In all the repairs took some 7 months.
