Attacks on this boat
5 Oct 1941
At 11.02 hours, the inbound boat was attacked by a Blenheim (1404 Met Flt RAF/A, pilot P/O Jack Coleman) in the Bay of Biscay. About 30 minutes earlier, the aircraft had unsuccessfully attacked U-563 and was searching for this U-boat when U-565 was spotted and attacked from ahead. The 250lb A/S bomb dropped actually hit the net deflector and conning tower of the crash-diving U-boat and bounced off as a dud. The aircrew apparently misinterpreted the rapid dive of the U-boat at a heavy angle and claimed a sinking, while she in fact escaped without damage. (Sources: KTB U-565/ADM 199-1782)
23 Apr 1942
The boat was attacked in the Mediterranean by a British aircraft with three bombs. The boat suffered slight damage.
1 Nov 1942
Aircraft attack, aircraft shot down:British Hudson AE591 (233 Sqdn RAF, pilot Sgt D.H. Jenkins)
At 12.50 hours, the boat crash-dived when attacked by the British Hudson Mk.III V9169 (233 Sqdn RAF, pilot F/S S. Woodward) south of the Balearic Islands. Four depth charges detonated near the bows and forced U-565 with severe damage back to the surface. The gunners immediately scored hits in the tail of the aircraft, so the A/S bomb dropped fell wide. The heavily damaged Hudson then left the area after recieving more hits during its third attack run. Shortly thereafter another Hudson from the same Squadron arrived at the scene and attacked U-565. Hit by AA fire during its first attack run, the aircraft dropped three depth charges, caught fire and crashed into the sea 500 metres from the boat, which sustained no futher damage in this attack.

After being battered with depth charges in the Mediterranean, the periscope of U-565 was damaged so severely that the boat was forced return to base.
4 recorded attacks on this boat.
Men lost from U-boats
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-565 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.
